Dr. Joyce has particular interest in understanding the neural connections between cortical and subcortical areas of the brain, and how disruptions on those connections influence behavior. His knowledge of the various ways that brain communication becomes distrupted helps him to understand the problems people experience.  These include problems with attention, memory, executive functioning, as well as emotional difficulties associated with depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. He has also used his understanding of implicit processes to help individuals struggling with problems that impact both cognition and emotion, including exposure to trauma and chronic pain. His understanding of working memory, the glue that holds adaptive functioning together, also allows improved insight in working with persons that struggle with the various learning disabilities.
